Contesting invisibility: Stories from Indian women migrants in Japan by Megha Wadhwa in Empirical art: Filmmaking for fieldwork in practice Eds Andy Lawrence and Martha-Cecilia Dietrich

This chapter explores the cinematic techniques used to portray the experience of Indian women moving and living abroad. It notes how women who relocate for their husbands’ job opportunities can become financially and emotionally dependent on their spouses, bringing loneliness and isolation into their lives with an impact on their mental health and general well-being. In the documentary Finding Their Niche: Unheard Stories of Migrant Women, the author shares the experiences of two Indian women migrants to Japan, highlighting their expectations and the difficulties they face in finding their place in a new society.
