I specialize in teaching students to examine the uses of language in real life or in media to discover the hidden ideologies and themes being spread, shared, and consumed, especially in relation to concepts of language, gender, and sexuality. The more critical thinking we use to examine such ideologies, the better society and world we can create for everyone to enjoy freely.

My seminar first focuses on macro critical theories helpful in areas of social science and humanities, we then begin the focus on microlevel analysis of discourse showing how the ways languages are used are connected to social actions such as discrimination and prejudice and also showing how symbols and meaning can be used to strengthen or contradict larger ideological messages within culture and society.
