Second language acquisition is influenced by various factors—both internal and external to the learner—leading each individual to construct a unique linguistic system in their mind. The more we deepen our understanding of second language acquisition processes, the greater the range of possibilities for creative learning and teaching. At the same time, we may find ourselves becoming more tolerant and compassionate toward learners striving to improve their second language abilities. In other words, SLA is both a theoretical and practical field of study.

The purpose of this course is to deepen your understanding of issues in Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) through discussions based mainly on student presentations. We will focus on various issues of English education in Japan today and some innovative approaches to English education. These are areas of SLA where research and language teaching come close together. Therefore, it is both theoretical and practical at the same time. As such, insights from various perspectives, including ideas, opinions, and questions of researchers, teachers, and learners, will all be useful. You are encouraged to take any of these perspectives in raising questions and approaching the topic. ​
